What learners say.
As a heritage speaker, I was curious where I stood. The adaptive difficulty made it challenging even for me at the higher levels.
Started learning 6 months ago. The test was motivating — I could see exactly which level I'm at and what to aim for next.
The adaptive algorithm worked well. Questions got harder when I was doing well and easier when I struggled. Felt really personalized.
How many Chinese characters do you know?
Test your Chinese character knowledge with our adaptive quiz. Starting from common characters and progressing to advanced classical vocabulary, the test adjusts to your level. Answer 20 questions selected from a pool of 60 characters spanning 5 difficulty levels.
Adaptive difficulty
The test uses an adaptive algorithm inspired by Item Response Theory. If you answer correctly, the next question is harder; if you answer incorrectly, it gets easier. This provides an accurate estimate of your vocabulary level in fewer questions.
5 difficulty pools
Our 60 characters are divided into 5 pools: beginner (common daily characters), elementary, intermediate, advanced, and expert (literary and classical characters). The algorithm selects from the appropriate pool based on your performance.
Your results
After 20 questions, you'll receive an estimated vocabulary size, your difficulty level, and accuracy percentage. You can share your results or retake the test to track improvement.
How accurate is the vocabulary estimate?
The estimate is based on your performance across adaptive difficulty levels. While not as precise as a full-length test, it provides a reliable ballpark figure for your current character knowledge level.
How many questions will I answer?
The test presents 20 questions, selected adaptively from a pool of 60 characters based on your performance. This keeps the test short while maintaining accuracy.
Can I retake the test?
Yes! You can retake the test as many times as you like. Each attempt may present different characters depending on your performance pattern.
What do the difficulty levels mean?
Beginner covers HSK 1-2 characters. Elementary covers HSK 3. Intermediate covers HSK 4. Advanced covers HSK 5. Expert covers HSK 6 and classical Chinese characters.
How does the scoring work?
Based on Item Response Theory (IRT). 60 characters across 5 difficulty pools. The algorithm starts at intermediate level and adjusts with each answer, converging toward your true ability. Final vocabulary estimate uses linear interpolation between levels.
